EPILOGUE
I left expecting to be robbed, raped and pillaged. As it turns out the people I dealt with were usually friendly and willing to help. All of the instances of violence that I hear of were in bars late at night or during armed robberies of commercial establishments. Pretty much like Houston. As a matter of fact, I didn't see any mention of drive-by shootings and so on.
The weather was great throughout my stay and the countryside I saw from hilltops and the airplane looked very beautiful. I think it would be a great country to visit again but I need to learn much more Spanish before I go. Or perhaps attend one of those schools where you live with your teacher while you learn Spanish.
Things were very cheap as long as you were willing to live on the local economy. I read that the average Honduran earns around $800 per year. That translates into a pretty low cost of living if you live on the economy. There's a considerable import tax on most things from outside the country. (Cars, imported liquor, radios, etc.) And a national sales tax of 7%. There's no income tax.
On several occasions I tried to bargain for a higher price than the seller was asking. The seller prevailed in all cases of which I am aware.
The country is pretty much undeveloped in many ways. They are not prepared for tourists in general. At least in this town (The National capitol) I suspect that there's more provision for tourists around the Copan Ruins and the Bay Islands off the north coast. That's both good news and bad news.
