Last night (this morning?) I heard (dreamed?) that some people were out in the street yelling things like "My name's not Pancho!" and so on. I then heard (dreamed?) the sound of three gunshots. It was quiet after that. I didn't go look.
I tried to call Continental Airlines at the airport but got no answer. The guy here (the owner) says they are only there when there's a flight arriving or leaving. Otherwise they're elsewhere.

I'm not sure if this view corresponds to the view mentioned. But anyway… |
Decided to go to the National Museum of Archeology. It's just up the hill from here. Started up the hill toward the museum and about half-way there I met the most delightful split-skirt yet. Honduras is truly a beautiful country. On up the hill, the museum isn't where the map says it is, or the road isn't, or I'm not. Given past history, probably the latter. Some nice views from up here. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.
Back to the hotel to try the airport again. No luck.
Off toward Morazan Blvd. Maybe the Book Village has a copy of the new phone book.
Decided to go ahead and buy two of the fondue pots. I wound up getting two for L20-$2.20 Now, the first trick will be to see if I can get these things back to Houston without breaking them. The second will be to figure out what to do with them.
During this portion of the walk, I thought I was going to die. There was so much dirt in my eyes that I'm surprised I could find the place. Even with wraparound sunglasses the dirt gets in. Never thought I'd say it but I wish it would rain!
Well, well, they've taken down the sign over the road that talks about the Indian restaurant. But now the Indian restaurant is back where it's supposed to be and it's open!
It has waiters with white shirts and ties. Place settings with water goblets and dessert spoons. Cloth napkins and air conditioning. My waiter had my water goblet filled with ice water before I could sit down. He was probably tipped off by the sweat dripping off of my nose.
Let's try some chicken curry, roti (kind of a French bread thing with garlic), nann (a traditional Indian bread that's usually made by sticking it to the side of a clay oven and baking it - in this case, it looked suspiciously like a tortilla. It tasted like nann however) and, of course, the requisite beer.
The food was pretty good. A smaller portion than I've gotten most places down here but remember, this is Indian food being served by Hondurans to an American so, who knows? Listening to the hare Krishna music was certainly an unexpected treat.
The meal was somewhat expensive (L58) and the beer was only cool but, they did give me three paper napkins to go with it and open the door for me when I left.
Book Village was open. They didn't have the phone book.
I decided to look in the super market in the mall where book village is located. I hoped to find some green coffee beans (but it wasn't a strong hope). Nope. I did buy a bag of roasted coffee beans just for fun. I also bought a block of brown sugar. I have visions of a cold day and a hot buttered rum.
Now to trek back to the hotel.
I keep wanting to turn down that street where I got lost/confused the other day. I've already been down it and I know there's nothing there. Nonetheless, since I have been down it, it looks familiar and I keep turning down it again because It looks familiar.
Dinner tonight is a WhopperBurger, fries and a coke at the Burger King on the parque centeral. Pretty good. First chain food that's been up to U.S.A. standards.
The parque/mall is really active this time of day. Unfortunately, I can hear the birds in the trees (It sounds like one of Hitchcocks movies) and, being a natural pessimist, I rapidly move on.
I'm in such a good mood that I decide to take a chance and walk past the Rio Lindo store where my "friend" works. I do keep my head down, walk fast, and stay on the far side of the sidewalk. I make it! The gods are kind!
Back at the hotel I talk to some other tourists from the Northeast USA. They work for a company that runs tours of the USA and Canada. This is their off season so they're traveling around.
They share some vodka and Kailua as well as stories of hiking through the jungle with a guide and tales of El Salvador (which they liked) and Nicaragua (which they didn't like)
